Ever since its opening, Amsterdamers have known blindly how to find Noorderlicht Café, the extraordinary restaurant and café on the banks of the IJ River. Without a doubt, the outdoor place is one of the most beautiful places in Amsterdam North.
Noorderlicht began more than sixteen years ago as a pioneer on the then still desolate NDSM site, with a temporary permit that was extended several times. Negotiations for a permanent license eventually took thirteen years, but all uncertainty has now come to an end. The catering establishment has received a permanent permit.
'Noorderlicht is considered an important added value to the NDSM Wharf and no area development is planned for the time being,' said aldermen Reinier van Dantzig and Rutger Groot Wassink in a joint statement.
"We are extremely happy to finally have certainty. Also because we have received recognition for our cultural, social and educational program. We are now really seen as an addition to the shipyard," said owner Jasper Helmer.
Sustainable menu and live music
Visitors are welcome here all days of the week lunch, dinner and drinks in the restaurant and on warm days on the terrace. The restaurant has already been awarded a Gaia Green Award three times as the most sustainable catering establishment because of an almost exclusively plant-based menu, supplemented by residual products from the meat industry. In addition to a sustainable menu, the café regularly offers live music and other cultural events in a relaxed atmosphere.
By ferry
If you are coming from the city, you can reach Noorderlicht by ferry from Central Station and the Houthavens. Sign NDSM. which you can reach by ferry from Amsterdam's Central Station.
